       The North Polk Community School District is a progressive educational community located in the Des Moines metro area just north of Ankeny serving the communities of Alleman, Elkhart, Polk City, and Sheldahl. The District proudly serves over 2200 learners from preschool through 12th grade in five buildings (West Elementary, PK thru 2nd; Big Creek Elementary, 3rd-5th; Central Elementary, PK thru 5th, Middle School, 6th-8th; and High School, 9th-12th). North Polk is seeking to hire a Human Resource Generalist at our District Office, located in Alleman, Iowa.

Compensation Range: $23-25 per hour, based on experienceDays: 260 (year round)Benefits: Benefits associated with this role include district paid premiums on single medical, dental, vision, and life insurance, 15 vacation, 13 sick and 2 personal days, as well as IPERS.Basic Function: To provide administrative support ensuring accuracy, efficiency, effectiveness, and transparency in the operations of district employment.

Performance Responsibilities:

  • Serve as front line liaison for employment inquiries. Escalate to appropriate staff as needed.

  • Maintain Human Resource Information Systems (Background checks, leave banks, HR and benefits, documents, etc.) and compile reports from databases.

  • Complete monthly and year-end reports regarding terminations, transfers, new hires, staffing, licensure, resignations, professional development, etc.

  • Provide technical support and training for all HR systems including hiring, absence, and training

  • As part of the onboarding process, set new hires up in the benefits system, as needed.

  • Act as approver and maintain employment postings and applications for both external postings and internal transfers in the application system.

  • Review and act as final approver for district openings. Post roles onto various job boards based on role, including Indeed and various school job boards.

  • Assist with employment application inquiries and requests for applicants and employees.

  • Create and maintain employment files and records in accordance with legal requirements and District policies and procedures. Solicit missing documentation as needed.

  • Ensure compliance with organizational training efforts for new and incumbent employees utilizing district training platforms (Vector, AEA, etc)

  • Administer Compensation Programs (salary lane changes, initial placement, certifications), issue and track contracts and letters of assignment.

  • Track, audit, communicate and maintain accurate certification and licensing information of certified or licensed professionals to comply with state and federal requirements.

  • Track, audit, communicate and maintain employee evaluations per board policy.

  • Coordinate and administer background checks, including new employment and compliance with Iowa Code recurring employment background checks.

  • Assist with projects, training, and benefits administration as well as work independently and within a team on special and ongoing projects.

  • Assist with new employee orientation planning and presentations. Contribute as needed with timely human resources department orientation and have a solid working knowledge of District employee benefits including insurances, negotiated agreement language, 403(b), leave provisions and District policies and procedures.

  • Manage student teacher contracts and coordinate placements.

  • Provide education and counsel employees on benefit plan provisions as needed.

  • Complete requisitions for human resources as assigned and follow procurement requirements of the district

  • Participate in employee retention activities/committees and service award programs.

  • Assist with open records request information, as directed

  • Assist in the exit interview process.

  • Assist with spot recognition opportunities as well as tenure based recognition programs.

  • Understand FMLA process, send required notifications, and correspondences as needed

  • Complete annual Fall Staff BEDS report to state

  • Research a variety of information (e.g. current practices, procedures, etc.) to provide information/recommendations and/or address a variety of administrative requirements.

  • Coordinate a variety of programs and/or activities (eg. interviews, job postings, testing, job fairs, onboarding, in-service day activities, workshops, travel accommodations, etc.).

  • Answer incoming HR telephone calls, screen calls, take messages or field/answer routine and some non-routine questions, handling all situations in a professional and courteous manner.

  • Participate in administrative staff meetings and attend other meetings or seminars as needed/directed.

  • Perform other related duties as required and assigned.

Specifications/Qualifications:

  • SHRM Certified Professional (SHRM-CP) certification or a willingness to obtain

  • 2-3 years experience in HR related field, highly preferred

  • Ability to handle confidential information in a discrete and professional manner

  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office and Google Suite applications

  • Strong organizational and time management skills

  • Attentive to detail and maintaining a high level of accuracy

  • Ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing, and in a professional manner

Physical Requirements:

This is a largely sedentary role though portions of the role require the ability to bend or stand as necessary.
