The Division of Chemical & Biological Sciences is seeking a postdoctoral associate with a background in synthetic chemistry to develop new organic radical-based probes for solid-state dynamic nuclear polarization (DNP)-NMR spectroscopy. The chosen candidate will join a large multidisciplinary team consisting of researchers from both Ames National Laboratory and Iowa State University, as well as other national laboratories and universities. The successful candidate will be responsible for synthesizing new organic-radical based probes for DNP- enhanced solid-state NMR spectroscopy seeking improvements in both sensitivity and operational complexity compared to conventional NMR or DNP-NMR.

Synthetic space will be in the new Hach Hall facility at Iowa State University, in the laboratory of Prof. Arthur Winter, which is fully equipped for modern organic synthesis (see thewinterlaboratory.com), and maintains access to a Bruker pulsed VT-EPR spectrometer with in situ capabilities. The research team also includes experts in solid-state NMR spectroscopy and dynamic nuclear polarization, with priority access to a laboratory with two solid-state dynamic nuclear polarization (9.4 and 14.1 T) spectrometers. The successful candidate will collaborate with other scientists in the Division of Chemical and Biological Sciences and the Division of Materials Sciences and Engineering for additional characterization needs.

The successful candidate must be able to communicate effectively with a variety of audiences, collaborate with a team, and have a commitment to working safely in the laboratory.

This is a 1-year term appointment, but there is potential for future employment subject to the availability of funding.

Required Minimum Qualifications:

Ph.D. in chemistry, materials science, or a related discipline.

Preferred Qualifications:

Experience in synthetic organic chemistry.

Experience with organic radicals/EPR spectroscopy is a plus, but not required.

A strong scientific publication record.
