The Division of Materials Science and Engineering at the Ames National Laboratory is searching for a qualified and strongly motivated Postdoctoral Research Associate to work with a diverse team of Staff Scientists, Postdoctoral Researchers, and Students. The successful candidate will conduct collaborative and highly independent research in low-dimensional quantum material, focusing on their characterization by low-temperature scanning probe microscopy (SPM) and other supportive experimental techniques (i.e., multi-probe scanning tunneling microscopy/spectroscopy). The project requires basic knowledge of ultra-high vacuum and cryogenics. Prior experience in experimental research in two-dimensional materials and interfaces and their atomic-scale scanning tunneling spectroscopy will also be advantageous. The work will include developing, planning, and performing low-temperature SPM experiments, critically analyzing results, performing optimization to improve outcomes, and generating reports, presentations, and manuscripts for publication.

Ability to handle multiple tasks, meet set milestones, and draft quarterly progress reports is essential. Strong interpersonal and teamwork skills with a positive attitude are also helpful in providing a professional work environment.

Part of the experimental work is designed to be conducted at the U.S. Department of Energy’s User Facilities, and extended stays at the User Facilities are planned for this position.

Required Minimum Qualifications:

Ph.D. degree in Physics, Chemistry, Materials Science or related fields.

Preferred Qualifications:

Demonstrated knowledge and experience with scanning probe microscopy-based techniques

Demonstrated knowledge and experience with ultra-high vacuum procedures.

1-2 years’ research experience following PhD.

Demonstrated publication record.
