The Iowa Department of Public Safety's Division of Criminal Investigation (DCI) is seeking aWord Processor 3within the Transcription Unit.

Organization Background:

The mission of DPS is to serve the people of Iowa by providing public safety services with leadership, integrity and professionalism through the core values of courtesy, service and protection. The Department is a statewide law enforcement agency and includes the Administrative Services Division, the Iowa State Patrol, the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation, the Iowa Division of Narcotics Enforcement, the Iowa State Fire Marshal and the Division of Intelligence. The Department works in conjunction with federal, state and local jurisdictions of the criminal justice community to provide for the safety of persons living in, or traveling through the State of Iowa.

Job Description:

• Edits and correct communiqués, reports, narratives, and interviews submitted by DCI field agents that may contain legal, medical, and/or law enforcement terminology.

• Creates comprehensive reports incorporating interviews, narratives, exhibits, photos, and other documents submitted by field agents for use by prosecutors.

• Creates reports of background checks of individuals and business entities.

• Transcribes investigative documents pertaining to highly sensitive cases including, but not limited to, homicide, kidnapping, sexual assault, and child pornography.

• Proofreads for accuracy, grammar, sentence structure, consistency, and clarity; makes suggestions and corrections for author approval.

• Evaluates and proofreads reports of team members.

• Develops and revises forms, handbooks, and other documents as required by DCI staff.

• Uploads documents into imaging system.

• Assists with training new employees and distributing workload for the unit.

• Assists supervisor with evaluating new templates.

• Assist other DCI Support Operations units with projects on an as-needed basis.

• High attention to detail, excellent proofreading skills, advanced skill with MS Word, and commitment to confidentiality required.

  • Must be able to work independently and maintain focus on time-sensitive tasks.

  • Must have excellent time-management skills.

Other Information:

The selected candidate must have passed a thorough background investigation conducted by Iowa Department of Public Safety investigators before a final letter of employment offer is delivered.

This is not a remote position.

Hours are 8:00 A.M. to 4:30 P.M. Monday through Friday at DPS headquarters in Des Moines.

Selectives

768 Word Processing:

6 months experience using standard word processing software to produce final draft correspondence, reports, and other documents without assistance.

Minimum Qualification Requirements

Applicants must meet at least one of the following minimum requirements to qualify for positions in this job classification:

1) All of the following (a, and b):

a. Ability to type at least 40 WPM NET; and

b. Two years of full-time experience in word processing functions such as: text editing and formatting, document storage and retrieval, and document merging experience.

2) Current, continuous experience in the state executive branch that includes one year of full-time work as a Word Processor 2.
