Qualifications

  2. Demonstrated personal and moral character that contributes to the best interest of the safety and welfare of the student/athlete

  3. Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Board of Education find appropriate and acceptable

Job Goal:To provide maximum learning opportunities for all participants and to provide each student with opportunities for obtaining the knowledge, experience, and skills necessary to become a positive contributor to the program. To help each participating student achieve an appreciation for the values of discipline and sportsmanship, and an increased level of self-esteem. Treat all participants, coaches, and staff in the program with respect and dignity.

Evaluation- Performance of all assistant coaches will be evaluated using the Mason City Assistant Coaching Evaluation Instrument. Each assistant coach will be evaluated on a three year rotation based on the program evaluation schedule. When the head coach is on formal evaluation, all assistant coaches are on that same formal evaluation. The Activity Coordinator will be primarily responsible for the evaluation with input from the head coach of the program and the building principal. The purposes of this evaluation are:

  1. To relate to the employee his/her present observable level of performance

  2. To meet any requirements established in the Coaches/Employee Handbook

  3. To improve school employee efficiency and effectiveness.

  4. To build and maintain an appropriate educational program for the students of the Mason City Community Schools.

General Statement of Responsibility- Each assistant coach has the responsibility of conducting the sport in the best interest of the school district by adhering to the the policies and regulations of the board of education, the Iowa High School Athletic Association, The Iowa Girls' High School Athletic Union, the Iowa Alliance Conference, and any administrative practices, procedures, or directives.

Specific Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Program Responsibilities

The Assistant Coach:

  • Is responsible for keeping practice periods for the sport within the confines of the time specified by the athletic coordinators and head coach.

  • Does not hold practice on Sundays, holidays or when school is dismissed early due to extreme temperatures or inclement weather.

  • Ensures that athletes out of the building by 6:00 pm on Wednesday.

  • Establishes safety and health rules: The coach provides for the safety and health of his/her athletes by establishing rules to ensure proper conduct and enforces them in relationship to department and school district policies. At all times the coach will be alert to conditions that may be dangerous to participants. Dangerous conditions also include inappropriate behavior and poor discipline.

  • Does not allow athletes to participate in a practice session without the proper paperwork and permissions filled out and completed prior to the start of the season including physical forms, concussion forms, and parent permissions.

  • Is responsible for a complete inventory of the equipment used for the sport to be filed with the head coach within two weeks after the conclusion of the season.

  • Is responsible for the proper aintenance of all equipment under the jurisdiction of the program.

  • Is responsible for recommending purchase of equipment, supplies, and uniforms, to the head coach, as needed.

  • Purchases nothing at school expense without written approval from the activity coordinator or principal.

  • Cooperates with all other coaches in providing the optimum sports program possible under existing conditions.

  • Turns in an alphabetical squad roster to the activity coordinator as soon as the squad is set up and enter the roster into the Bound Platform.

  • Keeps abreast of new developments, innovative ideas and techniques in the field.

  • Requires all athletes to pay for equipment lost or stolen at replacement cost.

  • Files all transportation requests with the athletic office.

  • Ensures all athletes are transported by means of school-authorized transportation only.

  • Ensures that for out of town games - athletes must return in the same manner in which they traveled to the contest. If an athlete wishes to return home with his parents, the parents must contact the coach before such permission is granted. If the student-athlete must travel from a contest with someone other than a parent, permission must be granted by the Activity Coordinator more than 24 hours in advance and approval will be communicated to the head coach.

  • Performs other duties as related to his/her assignments as designated by the activity coordinator or head coach.

Personal Responsibilities

Coaches individual participants in the skills necessary using appropriate instructional and conditioning techniques.

Enforces disciplined and sportsmanlike behavior at all times.

Thoroughly explains eligibility requirements and participation rules to all squad members and consistently enforces the policy.

When appropriate, completes and files injury reports.
