Job Description: Athletic Coach

REPORTS TO: Activities Director

FLSA STATUS: Exempt

STATUS: Part Time, Salary

DATE REVISED: May 10, 2016

BASIC FUNCTION:

Promote sportsmanship and teamwork while helping students master the skills necessary to compete and excel in their specific sport in a safe, productive and well-organized athletic program that aims to benefit all athletes.

SPECIFICATIONS/QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Valid Iowa Coaching Authorization or Athletic Coach Endorsement.

  • Prior coaching experience preferred.

  • Completion of Child Abuse Reporting Training.

  • CPR and first aid certified.

  • Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Board may find appropriate and acceptable.

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT:

  • Length of contract determined by athletic season.

  • The VSCSD Board of Directors in negotiation with the VSEA establishes salary & work year.

EVALUATION: The Activities Director evaluates the performance of this job.

GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Adhere to applicable state and federal laws, rules and regulations, board policies and administrative rules.

  • Demonstrate organization and professionalism in fulfilling the responsibilities of the position.

  • Maintain a “service orientation” and treat all students, parents, staff, and visitors with professional courtesy.

  • Demonstrate a positive attitude toward school, students and job while communicating the same to the community.

  • Attend seminars, trainings, classes, and professional development as needed to stay current with state and federal regulations and requirements and maintain licensure.

  • Dress appropriately for the position and work required.

  • Accept constructive criticism and suggestions while seeking to improve each performance responsibility.

  • Maintain professionalism related to confidentiality of student records and the school operation.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS::

  • Coach individual participants in the skills necessary for excellent achievement in the sport involved.

  • Plan and schedule a regular program of practice in season.

  • Work closely with the activities director in scheduling intramural and interscholastic contests.

  • Recommend purchase of equipment, supplies, and uniforms as appropriate.

  • Maintain necessary attendance forms, insurance records, and similar paperwork.

  • Oversee the safety conditions of the facility or area in which assigned sport is conducted at all times that students are present.

  • Establish performance criteria for eligibility in interscholastic competition in the coach’s sport.

  • Enforce discipline and sportsmanlike behavior at all times, and establish and oversee penalties for breach of such standards by individual students.

  • Work cooperatively with Bus Drivers and Transportation Director to ensure safe and efficient transportation of student athletes to and from sporting events.

  • Supervise student athletes at all time during school sanctioned practices and events to ensure safety and respectful and appropriate behavior towards teammates, competitors, and both home and away facilities and equipment.

  • Keep building administrator informed of any injuries or behavior concerns.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Able to communicate effectively via a telephone and email in a clear, precise manner.

  • Able to write and record reports utilizing basic computer functions.

  • Able to climb stairs or stand and walk for extended periods of time.

  • Able to sit, reach, carry, push, bend body at waist, bend both knees, twist, and stoop while handling items.

  • Able to read and interpret policies, procedures and employee handbook.

  • Occasionally lift up to 50 pounds using proper lifting techniques.

  • Able to work outdoors for periods of time in varying weather conditions if necessary.

  • Able to hear and speak in order to communicate with students, parents, co-workers, and supervisors.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

  • Primary work setting is the Assigned Attendance Center with travel to competitor Attendance Centers.

  • Will be required to ride a school bus or drive school vehicles to carry out responsibilities of the position.

  • Required to work outdoors for periods of time if necessary for sport or training.

  • Daily and weekly work hours will vary within season.
